Organize Your Home for Success

Written by | Aug 12, 2024 9:19:48 PM
As the summer’s activities begin to wind down and life transitions to fall, your home may not be as ready as you are – especially if you have children beginning a new school year. Maintaining an organized space has many benefits for both you and your home!

Reduce Stress Levels, Improve Productivity and Focus

One of the benefits of having an organized, clean home is the reduction of stress levels. Instead of feeling overwhelmed by disorder, staying organized allows you to dedicate your brainpower towards more enjoyable things, like spending time with loved ones or working on a hobby. A cluttered environment can also contribute to tasks taking much longer than they should due to distractions. Additionally, studies show that cortisol, the human stress hormone, can be heavily impacted by clutter.

Having an organized home increases productivity by saving time and increasing efficiency. When you’re surrounded by clutter, tasks may seem harder to complete, decreasing your day-to-day rhythm and productivity. By organizing your space, you create mental flow throughout the day – leading to better productivity, focus and mental clarity when it comes to decision-making.

Tip: You can foster a positive atmosphere and sense of well-being by maintaining a quiet area dedicated to work or a hobby. Keep items relevant to the task at hand in clear view, labelled and easily accessible. For children, it is helpful to designate a homework station, and keep a family calendar in view, so each month’s scheduled events aren’t forgotten or a surprise.

Health Benefits

While your mental health can benefit from organization in your home, staying organized also provides physical health benefits, including:

  • Improved Air Quality: Dust and allergens like pet dander can accumulate in your home over time, leading to a decrease in overall indoor air quality. An organized home makes regular vacuuming and cleaning easier, helping to reduce these particles and improve the air quality of your home.
  • Preventing Mold and Pests: Just like dust and pet dander, mold and bugs love to find cluttered places to settle. Mold can begin to form after just 24 hours and may cause health problems. Bugs like fruit flies and ants, albeit harmless, are pesky and can quickly invade areas.

Tip: Avoid using cardboard boxes in attics or basements, and instead use cedar lined boxes or include mothballs for organizing longer term storage to deter moth and pest infestations.
  • Overall Safety: Shoes, backpacks and other clutter on floors and in entryways can pose tripping hazards, and also act as blockages in the event of an emergency evacuation of your home.

Tip: Designate a specific area as a shoe, coat or bag drop-off that is easily accessible for family members of all ages. Wall pegs can double as storage and décor to hold purses, backpacks and jackets, and a bench that doubles as cubby storage works well for shoes.

Increase Resale Value

When you maintain a clean, organized environment at home, you can help increase its resale value over time. A home that’s been well-maintained, regardless of age, has a much higher shot at an increased sale price in comparison to those that have not.

Organization also helps once you’ve decided to begin the process of selling. A home staged and organized efficiently can showcase your home’s best features and soften potential flaws, making it look neat and creating a sense of spaciousness and flow. Try working with the space you have in each room and take advantage of organizational items that also double as decor like bookshelves, storage ottomans or entertainment centers.
